I recently went to the Boston Lights: A Lantern Experience  for the second year in a row. There are ample amounts of free parking, and tickets are reasonably priced at around $27.  This is a great event for everyone! I find that families with children go in the earlier hours. Less children are there once the sun sets and it becomes more popular with adults and couples. The light displays are so fun and bright, they make for great photo ops! There were some stations set up through the park where you could buy souvenirs. I would definitely take advantage of this if you are looking for a fun activity while in Boston. It is open for only a few more days, until October 23^rd. The Zoo is approximately 5 miles away from the Hotel, making it a doable adventure.

It’s not quite fall but once we turn the page on the calendar to September, it seems we always “fall” into an autumn state of mind.

And what better place to celebrate the entrance of fall than Boston?  The leaves aren’t ready to turn yet but there are still plenty of great things to see and do as the weather gets that wonderful crispy feeling.

Pickleball is big in Boston!  Get your paddle ready - there's plenty of places to play in the city.

Now open is Ballers Boston, a pickleball and padel club in the Seaport District, featuring over 30,000 square feet of space to play and have fun.  Ballers Boston will have three year-round padel courts, five pickleball courts that will convert into a synthetic ice rink in the colder months and a golf simulator.  For those who may not be aware, padel combines the elements of tennis and squash and is the next hot racket sport.  Ballers Boston is just a 10 minute walk from the Seaport Hotel, making it very convenient for guests.

PKL, a self-proclaimed “pickleball parlor” is located just down the street from Seaport, in nearby South Boston.  This indoor venue features 5 pickleball courts, plus a restaurant and lounge.  For new players, take a Pickleball 101 class!  

The Track at New Balance (91 Guest Street, Boston) is an ideal place to play pickleball in Boston, featuring new courts in the Multi-Purpose Room and offers pickleball open to the public most weekday mornings.  Check their website for hours and prices.  

Harpoon Brewery features 4 outdoor pickleball courts and is just steps from Seaport.  The courts are outdoors and lighted, and food & drinks are available for purchase.

The Somerville YMCA, about 15 minute drive from Seaport, is an ideal place to learn the game.  They have all the equipment to borrow (so no need to buy just yet!) and day passes are available for non-members.  Best of all, they offer free parking.  Be sure to check their website for hours as courts are available on a first come, first served basis.

In season, the nearby Lawn on D, already known as the place for outdoor games, features pickleball courts.  They are open during lawn hours and are first come, first served.  Guests can make reservations up to 14 days in advance by using their reservation system.  Their concessions are available for purchase; please note, outside food & drink is not allowed and this includes pre-filled water bottles.

2. Harborwalk (access points across the street near the World Trade Center): The Harborwalk is the perfect opportunity for a morning sprint or stroll with your canine companion. Polkadog Bakery (various locations, polkadog.com): Baked in South Boston and sold in locations throughout greater Boston (the North End and South End outposts are closest to the hotel), Polkadog Bakery offers small batch, handmade treats to your pup – think of it as Magnolia Bakery for the canine crowd. The company became a national name in 2012 when Target came knocking and wanted to feature it as one of its first “Main Street USA” brands. Despite the explosive exposure, the Polkadog team still manages to stick to its locally sourced ingredients that made it a household name.

•Legal Harborside (270 Northern Ave., Boston): Get a tan with your cocktail! Visitors looking for a cup of Legal Sea Foods chowder may keep the ground floor at the chain’s Legal Harborside flagship buzzing, but head upstairs to the third floor for one of the city’s most popular year-round rooftop experiences – just one block from the hotel! The menu is largely sushi-driven up here, and the cocktails pack a punch, which keep the “see-and-be-seen” scene returning night after night. Buttermilk & Bourbon brings a taste of the Big Easy and manages to extend that into its patio. This cozy outdoor lounge features a six-seat bar, heat lamps for crisp summer evenings, and, yes, as many Hurricanes as you can sip.

•Cinquecento (500 Harrison Ave., Boston): South Enders may flock to Cinquecento in the winter for hearty pastas and red wine, but the Italian hot spot is just as popular in the summer thanks to its chic patio and outdoor bar crafted from a shipping container. The outdoor lounge is great when paired with a trip to the Sunday SoWa Open Market next door. Order a Negroni and cheers to la dolce vita!

•TAMO Terrace: Stay close to home (or your hotel room) and wander downstairs to TAMO’s popular outdoor patio – opening June 1 for some Seaport summering! Christmas in the City holds an annual holiday party each December for 5,000 children and mothers living in homeless shelters or transitional housing. The following day, the group distributes 16,000 gifts of clothing and toys to those who might otherwise have nothing waiting for them under the tree. Proceeds from Thursday’s event will go toward purchasing these gifts, so come with all of your friends! With the Boston branch shuttering, the closest place one can get a hit of Hillstone will be New York City. Boston magazine reports the decision to close came as its lease was up; however, the Beverly Hills-based chain maintains they will continue to seek a new location—just not in such tourist-laden locale. “While many people work in the downtown area, it’s probably fair to say local Bostonians prefer other neighborhoods when considering nighttime or weekend dining plans,” said Hillstone vice president Brien Biel to Boston.

  While it may be a gamble to offer Asian-American fusion just a few blocks away from Chinatown, this popular food truck has amassed quite the following from its unique fare. The Double Awesome, a scallion pancake sandwich comprised of pesto, cheddar, and oozy eggs, more than lives up to its name. Be sure to also check out the pierogi dumplings stuffed with potatoes, cheddar, and veggies served up with a side of sriracha fried rice and pickles.

  Sometimes there’s nothing better than comfort food. We’re a fan of starting with an old classic like the Rookie Melt comprised of Vermont cheddar and tomato. The Green Muenster made of—surprise!—muenster cheese, bacon, and house made guacamole will make anyone not noshing green with envy. For those feeling particularly adventurous, the Mighty Rib Melt made with fontina, braised short rib, and carmelized onions make this hearty offering the perfect thing to warm you up on one of Boston’s bitterly cold days.

  This family-run food truck offers an amazing, rotating seasonal menu that keeps crowds coming back just to stay abreast of what’s new. One current offering that has us weak in the knees is the beef dip sandwich made with flank steak, jus, sambal aioli, and lime pickled vegetables. The roasted turkey sandwich comprised of cranberry and porchetta burnt ends stuffing and apple butter is also a must. For those looking for soup, the numerous rotating options like red kuri squash with pepitas and curried carrot are sure to please the palate.

  One of Boston’s most popular food trucks, Bon Me is quickly growing with actual brick and mortar locations (one recently just opened in nearby Fort Point); however, be sure to make it to Dewey Square to get the full, food-on-wheels experience. Patrons flock to the Chinese barbeque pork sandwich, which is a sweet and savory take on Chinese roasted Char Siu pork and comes loaded with such goodies as pickled carrots and daikon, housemade spicy mayo, and pork pate on a toasted baguette.
• All of these offerings are a ten minute walk away up Congress Street or just hop on the MBTA Silver Line at the World Trade Center station and go two stops to South Station. Of course, if you are feeling like even Dewey Square is a bit too far, fear not! TAMO Bistro and Bar here at the hotel has a special “Food Truck Nation” portion to the menu. Sample such street fare as chicken and waffles served with coleslaw and green-tomato jalapeno jam or dive into Nepalese Dal Bhat or Asian style pork buns—all without having to put on your coat and step outside.

Tatte Bakery has had us flocking to Brookline since it first opened in 2008. Founder and chef Tzurit Or is known for her beautiful pastries and equally gorgeous cafes. The company has grown from the original Brookline branch to 11 locations across Boston and Cambridge. Those of us in the Seaport were elated to get our own Tatte earlier this month when Tatte Bakery opened at 200 Pier 4 Boulevard. From gluten-free sandwiches and morning treats to Mediterranean meals and scrumptious deserts, Tatte keeps us coming back for more (and glad we have at least a few blocks between there and the hotel to walk off the calories).

If you’re in a rush but still in need of java, don’t forget about our very own Seaport Café, located at the lobby level of the hotel. From to-go coffee to personalized breakfast sandwiches, we’ll fuel you up to seize the day!

The 330-foot tall ship did not participate in last month’s Sail Boston festival due to it being stationed in Canada at the time. It last visited the Hub in 2000 during part of that year’s Sail Boston festivities. Tours are offered Friday from 3:30PM to 5:30PM, but these hours can change at the discretion of the captain. Be sure to stop by even outside of tour hours to take in the sight of this incredible piece of maritime history before she leaves for New York on Saturday!

We take being green seriously at the Seaport, and that’s most evident in our embrace of getting around town in the most sustainable ways possible. From bikes to water taxis, it’s easy to get to and from Seaport in ways far more energy-efficient than a gas guzzler. Our adjacent Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority World Trade Center station is your easiest access point to Greater Boston, and it’s about to get even more connected in 2019. MBTA, or “T”, travelers had a lengthy Christmas list, and it seems like the transit authority is ready to deliver.
 

New Green Line trains are beginning to roll onto the rails, and the entire Orange Line and Red Line (each of these subway lines is accessed just a few stops away on the Silver Line via South Station) fleets are due to be replaced over the next two years. Don’t think the MBTA forgot about our own line – the transit network will add five electric Silver Line buses to the line soon. Take the T – it’s your ticket to Boston!

Seaport's Guide to Top Freedom Trail Attractions

Boston’s historic sights are everywhere, and that can sometimes be a little overwhelming for first-time visitors. Luckily, the city cobbled together 16 of the top sights from Revolutionary history along a 2.5-mile trail through the heart of Boston that came to be known as the Freedom Trail. This literal walk through history passes from Beacon Hill, through Faneuil Hall, over to the North End, and concludes with Old Ironsides and Bunker Hill in Charlestown. For those with the time, we highly recommend exploring all of the Freedom Trail attractions, but we’ve included below a few important spots to get the most of “the Trail” on a quick itinerary:

•Beacon Hill (24 Beacon St., Boston, Park Street MBTA Stop): The Beacon Hill stretch of the Freedom Trail is also the beginning of the path. Not to be missed, it is your best chance to go off the course and explore the iconic architecture, gas-lit streets, and charming restaurants and shopping of Beacon Hill. The gold dome of the Massachusetts State House is an easy-to-find landmark for this swath of history.

•Guided Tours (139 Tremont St., Boston, Park Street MBTA Stop): The Freedom Trail visitor center at the start of the trail is a great place to get maps to lead you along the way. For those looking for a bit more character to their visit, check in with the attendants about a guided tour. These are led by in-character guides, giving guests authentic colonial flare while learning about Boston’s storied past.

•Faneuil Hall (4 South Market St., Boston, Government Center/State/Aquarium MBTA Stops):  The Cradle of Liberty is one of America’s top tourist attractions, and it is under a renovation to make it more appealing to visitors and locals alike. This stretch of the Freedom Trail is home to the National Park Service visitors center as well as plenty of dining, drinking, and shopping destinations to take a break from your stroll. Head to the Boston Public Market two blocks away for an even more authentic taste of Beantown.

•Revere House (19 North Square, Boston, Haymarket MBTA Station): One of the more popular Freedom Trail attractions, the grey, wooden home on this quiet, cobblestone square was the home of midnight rider Paul Revere at the time of the American Revolution. Built around 1680, it is the oldest building in downtown Boston. The Revere House became one of the first historic home museums when it opened its doors to the public in 1908. Exhibits range from the Midnight Ride to Revere’s work both before and after the Revolution.

•Charlestown (Monument Square, Charlestown, Community College MBTA Stop): The end of the Trail affords visitors some of the best views in the city and many of Freedom Trail attractions. Visit Old Ironsides (aka the USS Constitution) in the Navy Yard to see the oldest ship in the Navy and learn how she kept the Brits at bay during the War of 1812. Afterward, head to Monument Square to the Bunker Hill Monument, which reflects on the Revolutionary battle but also gives those who climb to the top an incredible view of the Boston skyline.

· Savenor’s Market (160 Charles St., www.savenorsmarket.com): If it is good enough for Julia Child, it is good enough for the rest of us! Since 1939, Savor’s has been the go-to meat purveyor at both its Cambridge and Boston locations. The Beacon Hill branch is conveniently located near the Charles/MGH Red Line station and features everything from rotisserie chickens to cuts of game. Pop in for a sandwich and take it to the nearby Esplanade for a picnic by the Charles River!

· Louisburg Square/Acorn Street: It’s hard to find a postcard of Boston that doesn’t include one of these two iconic areas of Beacon Hill. Acorn Street is known as the most photographed street in America, and we can see why! Cobblestones, perfectly billowing American flags, and gorgeous townhomes make these enclaves well worth your time for a leisurely stroll en route to the nearby start of the Freedom Trail.

· The Paramount (44 Charles Street, www.paramountboston.com): The Paramount is a long-standing favorite for its cafeteria-style ordering and strict order to not take a table until you get your food (don’t worry: there is somehow always one waiting!). Delicious burgers, hearty breakfasts, and cozy dinners make the Paramount a day-long favorite.

· Tatte Bakery & Café (70 Charles Street, www.tattebakery.com): Panera might now be an investor, but Tatte has stuck to its Boston roots. The quaint venue on Charles Street is a perfect spot to relax and recharge with a bakery treat and cup of delicious coffee. Plan for a visit on a sunny day and get a spot on the cozy patio out front.

What is a hot summer day without a cold beer? Harpoon Beer Hall is a great spot to have a favorite, try something new and look at the city skyline.  Tours are offered 7 days a week if you are looking for a way to fill time on a rainy day!
 

Boat House Fridays at the Spirit of Boston:  Scarred for life by Gilligan’s Island?  Friday nights on the Spirit of Boston may be just the remedy, for $30, you can alternate between an hour dockside and an hour cruising, so you aren’t out to sea for too long and can choose whether to stay all night or sail and go!
 

Deck Dining: Nothing makes you feel like you are on vacation more than al fresco dining!  Whether you are doing day-cation, stay-cation or just escaping on your lunch break, there are more great and varied al fresco options in the Seaport District than any place else in Boston. Whether having Margaritas at Temezcal, Oysters and Bubbles at Legals, Beer and Burgers at ABG, or (my personal favorite) stopping by our very own TAMO Terrace for Tiki Tuesday, you are sure to get the most out of this great weather, day and night!

· The 1897 “America’s Marathon” wasn’t even 26.2 miles—it measured 24.8! They conformed to Olympic standards of 26.2 miles in 1924.

· It wasn’t until the 1990 race when the winners of the marathon were also Olympic marathon gold medalists (both the male and female winners that year had won gold in the 1988 Summer Olympics).

· Think you saw a famous face run by? You likely did! Natalie Morales, Lance Armstrong, Will Ferrell, and Valerie Bertinelli are among the many celebrities who have completed the Boston Marathon.

· Even though women weren’t even allowed to participate in the Boston Marathon until 1972, Kathrine Switzer was the first woman to receive a number to run in the race—in 1967! How? She entered the race under the name K.V. Switzer and wore baggy clothes to disguise herself. Race official Jock Semple attempted to physically remove her from the race, but her then-boyfriend blocked him and other officials, and Switzer went on to finish the race. Girl power!

· As runners pass through Wellesley, they would be wise to cover their ears: students at the all-girls school line up on either side of the course to holler in what is called the “Scream Tunnel.”

· Despite Heartbreak Hill’s infamy for breaking many a runner’s spirit at mile 20, it is actually the starting line in Hopkinton that is the highest point in the entire race—463 feet above sea level compared to Heartbreak Hill’s 263 feet.

Something is fishy this weekend, and that’s okay! The 2017 Boston Seafood Festival is August 13 at the historic Boston Fish Pier just a block away from Seaport. The family-friendly event runs all day long and offers seafood tastings, clambakes, chef demos, and more fun. Neighborhood favorite Harpoon Brewery will host its own beer garden, too! You may not be able to go under the see like Ariel and Flounder, but this is pretty darn close!

Compete for cash prizes at the Battle of the Shuckers, sponsored by Matunuck Oyster Farm. Keep the competitive spirit going at the fish cutting contest, too! Chefs from Boston’s top restaurants like Serafina, Yvonne’s and the Daily Catch will be on hand to show off their seafood prowess. For once, it’s okay to be shellfish!

The mayor said in a statement to Boston Herald Radio that it was an opportunity to encourage restaurants to open in neighborhoods targeted for development like Roxbury and Mattapan. He added, “I see this as an opportunity to bring increased economic activity to neighborhoods across Boston and I thank the Licensing Board for taking up this measure that has great potential to make a positive impact on our city’s economic growth.” The move comes as more restaurants find it harder to obtain one of the increasingly fewer available State-controlled liquor licenses—with some going for as much as several hundred thousand dollars.

While Walsh asserted that restrictions will be tight and patrons shouldn’t plan on rolling a pony keg or case of wine into their local mom-and-pop restaurant, guests would be allowed to have a few beers or bottles of wine per table. The Licensing Board will spend the next few months drafting official regulations to BYOB before putting it into practice.

• From my perspective, remember the location, day of the week and type of event you are going to can also provide guidance for what to wear.
• Going to an after work event? Business attire is always acceptable, but maybe ditch the bulky work bag for a clutch and some fun shoes, or a great signature accessory to help you transition from day to night when there isn’t much time for a glamourous costume change.
• Weekend Events are usually more formal, and easier to dress for as you are not battling traffic to get from desk to dinner. Take a cue from the flow: if there is dancing to end the night, you know that the tone of the evening will be more social and therefore a party or cocktail dress is an ideal –and fun-choice.
• Take the location of the event into consideration, for example, if you are going on a boat, nautical chic (don’t forget appropriate shoes!) is always a good look!

· Castle Island (2010 William J Day Blvd., Boston): One of Boston’s favorite relaxation points happens to be just around the corner. Castle Island is a perfect spot for morning jogs or leisurely picnics – all with a perfect view of Boston Harbor and the planes landing and taking off from Logan Airport. Save room for a snack at nearby Sullivan’s, a popular neighborhood lunch shack that offers fried seafood and soft-serve ice cream.

· Provincetown: Take to the seas on the Provincetown Fast Ferry (which sails from across the street at our own World Trade Center terminal) and be on the Outer Cape in 90 minutes! Provincetown is an eclectic enclave at the end of Cape Cod and is a favorite summer retreat. · Acorn Street (Acorn and Willow Street offers the best photo vantage point!): Known as the most photographed street in America, the cobblestoned Acorn Street was home to many coachmen who worked for families living in nearby Beacon Hill mansions. Today, it’s a haven for tourists and locals looking for a great addition to their Instagram. Hop on the MBTA to the Charles/MGH stop on the Red Line. · Trillum Brewery (Atlantic Ave. and High St.): Bask in the fruits of all the Big Dig labor while sipping a cold brew? Sign us up! Trillium Brewery (from just down the street in Fort Point) has opened a beer garden on the Rose Kennedy Greenway, and it has quickly emerged as the city’s favorite summer hotspot. Located across the street from Rowes Wharf, Trillium Beer Garden features 6-8 rotating beers from the craft brewer as well as three wines from Westport Rivers Vineyard. Trillium opens Wed. to Fri. at 4 pm and on weekends at 11 am.

· TAMO Terrace: Stay close to home (or your hotel room) and wander downstairs to TAMO’s popular outdoor patio – now open for fun in the sun! Sip a sangria, nosh of one of our many delicious dishes, and see the Seaport go by.

• Boston Public Market

  This local food bazaar opened in July, and it’s received rave reviews from the crowds it’s been pulling in ever since. Home to everything from a butcher to a craft beer alley, the Boston Public Market truly has something for everyone. Jillian recommends the marshmallows from Sweet Lydia’s, fresh pasta from Nella Pasta, chocolate bars and made-to-order drinks from Taza Chocolate, meat from Chestnut Farms, apple cider donuts from Red Apple Farm, and just about everything offered from Union Square Donuts. For these and other vendors, head to the BPM—located conveniently above Haymarket Station. Open Wednesday through Sunday from 8AM-8PM.

• Island Creek Oyster Bar

  In a seaside city like Boston, it’s hard not to come across fish on the menu, so we knew it was a big deal when Jillian claimed this Kenmore Square restaurant had the best seafood in town. Located inside the Hotel Commonwealth (alongside other culinary hotspots Eastern Standard and the Hawthorne), Island Creek has a lively atmosphere and—per Jillian—“cooks seafood to perfection.”

• Harvard Square/Cambridge

  Jillian’s finds the region’s food mecca to be across the river around Harvard Square. Her absolute favorite called Giulia is just past Harvard Square on Massachusetts Avenue. Here she recommends the bucatiniall’amatriciana among the many creative, standout dishes on the menu. Other Cambridge favorites on her list are Alden & Harlow (one of the most blogged restaurants in the world!), TW Food, and Park.

• South End

  Everyone from young hipsters to established couples from the suburbs flock to this neighborhood most nights and weekends to score a table at its bevvy of chic, trendy restaurants. Jillian’s top three include tapas bar Toro, Barcelona Wine Bar, and Stella. Each are heavy favorites of the see-and-be-seen crowd, so be sure to make reservations in advance!

• South of the Border Sizzle: The team behind La Casa de Pedro, a popular Latin American restaurant in Watertown, will soon open a second branch in our backyard at 505 Congress Street. Aiming for a summer start, chef/owner Pedro Alarcon will bring big portions with Venezuelan inspiration, live music, and nine variations of the mojito to his 10,000-square-foot Seaport outpost.
• A Tale of Two Burgers: We couldn’t be more excited for the opening of two popular NYC burger joints that are as far apart on the patty spectrum as one can get. Shake Shack will hold court in the Watermark Seaport at 85 Seaport Boulevard. The company’s fifth Boston-area outpost will bring its crinkle-cut fries, frozen custard, and seasonal Maine lobster-topped Surf ‘N Shake burger to our neck of the woods early next year. Also, keep a look out for By Chloe, an uber-hip vegan burger chain going into the PricewaterhouseCoopers building at 101 Seaport Boulevard. Chef Chloe Coscarelli was the first vegan chef to win Food Network’s Cupcake Wars and brings to Boston a medley of vegan burgers, salads, sandwiches, dairy-free ice cream, cookies, and, you guessed it, cupcakes.
• Carnivorous Delight: Meat lovers will find two new entries into the neighborhood’s growing steakhouse establishment currently populated by such Seaport favorites as Ocean Prime. Mastro’s Steakhouse at 22 Liberty is going into a space that was originally rumored to be a resurrected Sam’s at Louis. However, the team behind Sam’s decided to focus on South Boston’s the Maiden, and now visitors to Fan Pier can expect to be showered with signature crab cakes, beef carpaccio, and a variety of cuts of red meat—all with a stunning view of Boston Harbor. For those desiring a more feminine side to their filet, STK Rebel will be the place to be, as they promise to “paint the town pink.” The steakhouse at One Seaport Square will have a live DJ most evenings and also offer a lower price point than its sister brand STK.
• The Palate at PwC: The new PricewaterhouseCoopers building at 101 Seaport Boulevard is going to be quite the gourmet hub. Along with By Chloe, Aceituna Grill and Yoki Sushi will offer healthy, fresh fare for your growling stomach. Yoki will bring more choices for sushi and Japanese fare in the neighborhood. Aceituna has become a hotspot for Mediterranean fare in Kendall Square with lines routinely out the door for such favorites as chicken shawarma, Greek salads, and hummus. It seems only natural to open a location in this innovation neighborhood as well!

Eventide Oyster Co. is an award-winning oyster bar in Portland that always has a seemingly endless wait to get a table, but don’t worry: the shellfish is worth it. Some might think it’s a little bizarre to go up to Maine just for the sake of a restaurant, which is silly. The oysters really are that good! However, if you’re looking to keep it local, the James Beard Award-winning duo of Andrew Taylor and Mike Wiley and business partner Arlin Smith just opened Eventide Fenway on Saturday, October 7.

Unlike the full-service mothership to the north, Eventide Fenway will be a fine-casual counter-service venue. Boston magazine reports staples like the brown butter lobster roll, expertly curated beer and wine list, and, obviously, oysters will be just as prevalent on the Boston menu as the one back home. In turn, Boston’s branch is a lot bigger. Eventide Fenway seats 70, is designed to look like a spiraling shell, and features a 10,000-pound granite oyster bar (Portland’s is “only” 1,500 pounds). 16 outdoor seats will also be around once spring has sprung.

I don’t love microbrew beers, so I was shocked when I tried Sea Dog Sunfish-perfect mix of not-to-hoppy-not-too-sweet with grapefruit flavors! This is a limited edition that sold out last season, so be sure to get it while you can!

With the popularity of Rose, there is nothing better than a rose sangria! I reached out to our resident cocktail guru, our Beverage Director Eric Loring, who shared my favorite in-house recipe for your sipping pleasure:

4 bottles Rosé

8 oz Tempus Fugit Violette

3 oz Pilar Blonde Rum

2 oz St. Germaine

6 oz Fresh Lime Juice

4 peaches

5 strawberries

Prep: Macerate sliced peaches & strawberries in a bowl with a teaspoon of sugar sprinkled on top for an hour.

Combine ingredients in a large pitcher or gallon sized container. Chill overnight.

Glassware: Wine

Garnish: Sliced strawberry

This is a great recipe that can be pared-up or pared-down based on the size. Don’t forget to freeze some in ice cube trays to keep your drink cool and minimize watering-down!

Claimed to be the second-oldest establishment in existence in the United States, the Old South Meeting House will begin its facelift this week with restoration work on its 5,400-square-foot ceiling. Paint from the late 1800s will be removed and fresh coats applied after this December’s Boston Tea Party reenactment. In partnership with Millennium Partners, the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund contributed $95,000 to the project, which is expected to be completed by March of next year. Want to know more? • Boston Calling Block Parties: The organization behind the Boston Calling music festival is known for transforming City Hall Plaza twice a year into a bastion of the hottest acts on the radio, but why limit the fun? They started a weekly concert series in 2014 in Dewey Square that is back for this summer. Grab a drink at the cash bar, find a spot on the grass under the famed and ever-changing mural, and listen to some of the hottest local bands each Thursday from now until September 15. Plus, it’s only two stops away on the Silver Line from our World Trade Center MBTA station.
• Lawn on D: Walk up nearby D Street to increasingly one of the hottest spots in the entire city. This grassy enclave by the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center is part park, part concert and event space, part cocktail and concession stand, and part…well, just about anything you can think of. The park opens on May 21 for the 2016 season. Opening weekend will include a children’s festival and Lawn After Dark concert on Saturday while Sunday will offer a jazz brunch and sunset screening of Fever Pitch. Plus, be sure to take a selfie amid the many lawn games and adult-friendly swing sets—they glow in the dark!
• Blue Hills Bank Pavilion: This Live Nation-operated concert venue has some of the best views of Boston Harbor and is just a few blocks down Northern Avenue. Having hosted a variety of acts along the likes of Diplo to Norah Jones, Blue Hills is certain to have something for every music taste this summer. •Gelateria (272 Hanover St., Boston): Most visitors to the North End fight over Mike’s and Modern cannoli, but the sweet treats at Gelateria, to Ashley, reign supreme. They don’t use a pastry bag to fill them. Instead, they pack the filling in with a spatula so there is never that little empty gap in the middle. Be sure to try the gelato, and, since Gelateria is not one of the big-name shops, there is never a line down the block.

• North Station: The most underway of the three, North Station’s redevelopment has been coined the “Hub on Causeway.” Comprised of three phases, the first part of the Hub—entailing a $285 million multilevel podium to be completed by 2018—is under construction and will bring a Star Market, 15-screen movie theater, and finally provide a covered, underground connection between the subway and commuter rail platforms. The second phase will bring both a 38-story residential tower and a 10-story hotel. The entire 1.5-million-square-foot project will be completed with a 21-story office tower with a sky lobby and spire to provide a breathtaking northern gateway to the city.

• Back Bay Station: Long derided for its dingy waiting areas, limited retail outlets, and poor ventilation that causes diesel fumes to accumulate, Back Bay Station’s redevelopment proposal is the newest of the three. Boston Properties, the company also behind the remake of North Station, unveiled plans in late March to transform the station and its surrounding block into a retail, residential, and office hub. The hulking, adjacent parking garage on Dartmouth and Stuart Streets would be partially demolished and incorporated into an architecturally unique, twisting office tower. A little-used bus plaza behind the station would be replaced with two residential towers while the concourse of the station would get expanded retail with up to two new floors for either a department or grocery store. The station is already receiving $32 million in renovations later this year that will bring expanded waiting areas, more retail options, renovated restrooms, and better lighting.

• South Station: Plans to use air rights to develop above the tracks at South Station have been on the books and actually approved for years, but the project had languished amid the Great Recession. However, an impending BRA deadline might actually get shovels moving and produce an iconic addition to Boston’s ever-changing skyline. Houston developer Hines has approval for 1.9 million-square-feet of new development that includes a 677-foot office tower and two smaller buildings that would house a hotel and residential component. However, city officials told the Boston Globe that developers had implied there might be more residential and less office in an updated proposal. With the development rights expiring in 2017 and a new investor behind the project, look to see construction commence quickly at New England’s largest train station—only two stops away from Seaport on the Silver Line!

Open all day, every day, the Encore attracts visitors from all areas of the state and beyond. Despite the large crowds, getting to the casino has been made simple thanks to the many modes of available transportation.

We are thrilled to share that the harbor shuttle to the Encore is leaving from our docks at the Seaport World Trade Center. Guests can utilize this service to check out the casino without the burden of a car. The trip across the harbor is scenic and quick, taking approximately 25 minutes, and the shuttle is operated by Bay State Cruise Company.

• Harbor shuttle is continuous, arriving every 20-30 minutes

Back in March, we were all stunned with the photos of the first Billion Dollar Wedding that took place in Russia. How can you possibly top that? Clearly by a TWO BILLLION Dollar wedding! Within the last week photos and details from the latest extravagant wedding that took place last week for an Armenian couple.

While this budget is not achievable for anyone not on the Forbes Richest list, the trends at this mega-level that we are seeing this wedding Season and as trends can serve as inspiration for brides with all budgets:

While this wedding is the very definition of over-the-top, I bet even that Bride (and her planner..or planners!) had some form of a budget to stick with along the way. Admittedly, not every couple is fortunate enough to afford JLo and Sting, but it is important to know where to go for guidance when managing costs associated with your special day!

Over the years, my go-to budget calculators have been those on theknot.com and weddingwire.com, but those can sometimes be overwhelming at the beginning of the process. As a start, I love this slide show from Marthastewartweddings.com to get some preliminary ideas.

Regardless what tool you use, the important thing to remember is that you can always tailor these suggestions to fit your vision, budget and dream as you design your day, your way!

The good news is, many of the current wedding trends also translate nicely to the principles of doing your day, in an eco-friendly way. Even better news? Going green for your special day can reduce the amount of money you spend. With Earth Day, just around the corner, this is a great time to reflect on a few opportunities and ideas that make your wedding as sustainable as it is stylish!

One-stop spots

Having the ceremony and reception in one location has so many benefits. Ecologically, it reduces emissions and gasoline usage, particularly when you factor in the popularity of larger vehicles such as party busses and trolleys, both of which are so popular now. From a guest perspective, this eliminates them having to drive to multiple locations, reducing their emissions and gasoline usage, and makes a much more seamless experience for them. If these benefits aren't great enough, this can also be a significant budget savings, as average wedding transportation ranges from $2-5K for many of our weddings.

Green Venues

While I am referencing location, it is always important to partner with a venue that embraces your priority of green practices as it relates to being eco-friendly. Here at Seaport, we are proud of our sustainable initiatives that include bees on our roof, a working herb garden that is used in our restaurant and banquet facilities and our sustainable practices in guest rooms and behind the scenes at the Hotel. Many venues like ours also offer "Green Resumes" that showcase these practices and are a great way to ensure that you are working with a partner that embraces your commitment to our environment.

Locally sourced food

Fresh, locally sources and regional cuisine is EVERYWHERE in the event industry right now. Not only is this a great on-trend way to provide an experience and education in your menu, but sourcing selections within an ideal 75-mile radius also has major benefits to our planet, and can also save overhead and costs.

Centerpieces

Lately we have seen so many wonderful and personalized centerpieces. Last summer, my cousin got married in Monterrey and being extremely environmentally conscious, had her bridal party work together to create window boxes from recycled Redwood, which were filed with succulents. Not only was this very on trend and literally a "Green" wedding, but they were also great keepsakes that lasted long after the wedding. This was magical on many fronts, because it truly reflected their taste, style and commitment to our planet, while creating a great story about them that was shared many times throughout the night. This is another great example of something that was both eco and economically friendly!

Cut the Cake

Literally, as in cut out the cake. If wedding cake is not important to you, and not something your friends and family tend to eat, this is a nice way to eliminate waste and yet another way to save money.

Multi-faceted vendors

So many vendors now bundle their services, and can serve as a single point of contact for music, lighting and photo booths. Not only does using one vendor for multiple services save stress and effort, it cuts down on the amount of paperwork, streamlines your time when it comes to confirming and making decisions, and ultimately cuts the footprint of additional cars and vehicles making deliveries for your special day.

Say Goodbye to Programs and Menus

Another money, time and resource commitment that can be re-imagined with the environment in mind is the creation and production of ceremony programs and menu cards. While these are certainly always a nice touch, they are always only briefly regarded, then discarded. Communicating these important messages can easily be done on lovely boards that can be viewed as all guests enter, and serve as part of your décor as well as a special keepsake for the day. In the spirit of reducing, these can also be done either by row or by table, to cut down on what is used. Ten years after my own wedding, the menu card we posted at each table is still displayed in a shadow box in my dining room as a memory from the day!

While making the shift from Eco to I Do can be challenging, for some couples, it’s essential. Whether they are truly passionate about reduce, reuse, recycle or simply interested in saving money, many modern couples are making their weddings both eco-friendly and chic! Although Earth Day may have come and gone, it’s still a good time to consider some ideas that save resources.

Invitations

For many modern brides, invitations are no longer the priority we have seen in years past. The time, and effort that goes into addressing and stamping causes stress and also has a price tag. Paperless Post was the pioneer in this area, but Evite has also expanded offerings. My personal favorite, Greenvelope, has options for RSVP tracking and messaging-what a great way to save some cash but also can get reminders and details out to guests! These not only save the paper and elements of the invitation itself, but also packaging, and the footprint involved with shipping to you, mailing to your guests and return RSVP service. If you do opt for paper, choose recycled paper and be sure to add a note letting your guests know it will be an eco-friendly wedding and of course, remind them to recycle the invitation!

Dresses

As it relates to the Wedding gown, simply Google "Eco Friendly Wedding Dresses" and you will get pages upon pages of search results. With vintage trends being on the rise, romantic dresses from years’ past are always special. This is also a wonderful way to incorporate a family gown, which passes down a story from generation to generation and personalizes the day for your guests.

As it relates to the Bridesmaids, we are seeing more and more brides move from one set look and fabric, to more individuality. By having your girls don a dress they may already have (in something that matches the scheme of course) you eliminate stress, save your maids some money and ultimately will reap the benefits of better photos, as everyone has a much better smile and a better time at the wedding when they are comfortable and haven't broken the bank to make the night possible.

Registry

What is eco-friendlier that skipping the waste of bags, boxes and bows for bridal shower and wedding gifts? More and more couples already live together and in many cases, already own their home together. This makes the notion of the traditional china-pots-and-pans registry less of a priority now than ever before. With this, many couples are opting out of picking up a scanner gun and are registering for experiences, honeymoons, or even cash. Sites like Zola and Blueprint Registry allow couples to customize their experiences. In addition to being more green, it also saves time and energy for your friends and family, not to mention a trip to the mall.

As we gear up for Wedding Season this summer and beyond, it is always great to be sure you have an Emily Post moment, and are on-point with all wedding etiquette, especially as it relates to your invitations!  If your wedding is taking place in early June, invitations should be out now (urgent trip to the post office, anyone?)  Fun tip: If you are here in Boston, the Fort Point Post Office located at South Station is a sorting center and is great getting for any last minute wedding correspondances, birthday cards or holiday cards to their intended recipients, fast!

A few other pieces of advice to be sure you take into consideration:

-Note cut-off dates of any room blocks on any correspondences that reference it, and be sure to include that on your wedding website;

-If you are adamant about hosting an “Unplugged Wedding” you should definitely put that communication out well in advance of the big day;

-Make sure you are checking your contracts and aligning your RSVP dates to match what you have committed to venues and vendors.

Remember that no matter how organized (or conscious of etiquette) you are, there are always things that can happen beyond your control.  Small reply cards can get lost in the mail, and some guests will forget to return the RSVP on the requested date.  Take a deep breath, keep your sense of humor and use a spreadsheet to keep yourself organized!

We are officially in the throes of wedding season! Gorgeous weather, hot days (and even hotter nights on the dance floor) can wreak havoc on a Bride’s look!

From my perspective, I always tell brides to be sure to stay hydrated, keep alcohol to a minimum, especially before stepping in front of the camera, keep in mind the season when figuring out hair (an up-do always stays camera-ready!) and ALWAYS build in plenty of break time in A/C when doing outdoors!

But what about some tips from behind the lens?

I reached out to my friend Nikki Cole of Photography by Nikki Cole fame to ask what advice she gives her brides for looking show-ready in their photos during the hot summer months.  In true Nikki fashion, she tells it like it is! Here are her top tips:

“I am a big fan of the first look, because it happens early before you start ‘glowing’ in a bad way from the heat.”

Taking a page from her book, when once upon a time she was a Seaport Bride, this is my favorite piece of advice from Nikki:
 

“What I should have done on my wedding was ask my most honest bridesmaid to be on guard and tell me to reapply. Half way through my wedding, I was on the dance floor without any make-up remaining and could have used someone to tell me when to reapply more powder!”

All You Need to know About Visiting the Holiday Market at Snowport

It's that time of year again, the Holiday Market at Snowport returns to the neighborhood on November 8th!  This festive open air market features over 120 local and small businesses.  It's the ideal opportunity to shop in the Seaport District while checking some names off that list of yours. 

Guests will enjoy live music while sipping on themed specialty cocktails and indulging in tasty snacks.  They can write holiday wishes on a 25-foot interactive chalkboard while keeping their eyes open for Betty, the cutie pink yeti.  

Makers at the market this year offer everything from children's items to apparel and accessories to gourmet gifts.  Many of the businesses are Black-owned, Asian-owned, LGBTQIA-owned, Indigenous-owned, Latinx-owned or Women-owned (or a combination).  Approximately two-thirds of the businesses are from New England and 17 are food & beverage concepts.  There truly is something for every person on your gift list.

New retailers include FLYN, which sells accessories, ceramic maker Alyssa Bazaar, and Boston Soap Co., along with Sock Puppet City (featuring, you guessed it, sock puppets!)  Food retailers include Cheese Louise, featuring grilled cheese and soup, Cambridge shop Curio Spice and East Boston based Petrova Chocolates, the Half Cookie, Dumpling Daughter featuring dumplings and baos, and the specialty cheese seller A Little Slice of Europe.

Take a few minutes and make our Honey Citrus Iced Tea at home - delicious and refreshing for the warm summer months ahead!

SEAPORT’S HONEY CITRUS ICED TEA

4 tea bags

2 cups boiling water

3 oranges

2 lemons

½ cup lemon juice

2 cups orange juice

3 tablespoons Seaport honey

4 cups ginger ale chilled

Ice cubes

Place tea bags in a teapot, add boiling water, cover, let steep for 4 minutes. Discard teabags, pour tea into pitcher.

Peel and section 2 oranges and 1 lemon, add to tea. Stir in the orange juice, lemon juice and honey, cover and refrigerate overnight.

Cut the remaining orange and lemon into slices and freeze.

Just before serving, strain and discard the fruit and stir in the ginger ale. Serve with frozen fruit slices and ice.
